PM Modi thanks French President Macron for medical aid in fight against Covid-19

In a telephonic conversation on Wednesday, PM Modi thanked French President Emmanuel Macron for the assistance rendered by France to India

In a telephonic conversation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked French President Emmanuel Macron for the assistance rendered by France to India in battling the deadly second wave of coronavirus in the country.

At the start of this month, France announced support for India in the form of 8 medical oxygen generators, manufactured by French firm SME, aimed at making Indian hospitals self-sufficient in oxygen supply for ten years. The European nation also sent across liquid medical oxygen containers, as well as 28 ventilators and 200 electric syringe pumps.

Tweeting about the phone call with President Macron, Prime Minister Modi said, "Spoke to my dear friend, President @emmanuelmacron. I thanked him for France's prompt assistance to India's Covid-19 response. We also discussed bilateral, regional and global issues, including cooperation in climate action and Indo-Pacific."

A press statement from the Prime Minister's Office said both leaders expressed their satisfaction at the positive outcomes of the recently concluded India-EU Leaders’ Meeting.

"Both the leaders agreed that the announcements regarding resumption of negotiations for balanced and comprehensive free trade and investment agreements, and India-EU Connectivity Partnership were welcome steps," it added.

PM Modi also reiterated his invitation to President Macron to visit India as soon as conditions permit.

On May 8, India and the European Union (EU) had announced their decision to resume negotiations for a balanced and comprehensive trade agreement after a gap of eight years and unveiled an ambitious connectivity partnership, during a virtual meeting between PM Modi and leaders of 27 member nations of the bloc.

The leaders discussed bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest, and expressed their satisfaction at the positive outcomes of the recently concluded India-EU Leaders' Meeting, the PMO said.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the depth and strength that the India-France Strategic Partnership has acquired in recent years and agreed to continue working closely together in the post-Covid era.

During that meeting earlier this month, PM Modi had also invited the EU to support a proposal by India and South Africa to waive patents on Covid-19 vaccines so that there can be equitable vaccine access for the entire world.
