IFCCI Higher Education Club in association with Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas conducted a webinar on ‘Internationalising Education in India’ on 17th August 2023, discussing the various aspects of collaboration between Indian and foreign universities and the regulations for foreign universities to setup Campus in India. The webinar saw active participation by nearly 35 members of the Higher Education Club.

India is emerging as one of the key study destinations for international students and Education being one of the major sectors of discussion for the G20 summit, the topic of Internationalisation of Education in India becomes an important one.

At the outset, Ms. Rishika Roy, Head – Committees & Partnerships, IFCCI opened the session and shed light on the importance of the Education sector between India and France. She further introduced Ms. Aarushi J, Partner (Head of Media, Education & Gaming) Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, who skillfully moderated the session and set the context for the webinar.

Our speakers for the session, Mr. Ed Dixon, Executive Director, SannamS4, Prof. Padmanabha Ramanujam, Dean Office of Academic Governance and student life, O.P. Jindal Global University and Ms. Sharada Kalamadi, Senior Counsel – Partnerships, Coursera talked about how the National Education Policy 2020 has been a game changer for the Indian Education system.

Some of the key topics of the discussion were focused on the Collaboration opportunities for foreign universities in India. India is emerging as an important educational partner for the world and more and more foreign institutes are setting up their campuses in India. Govt of India’s NEP 2020 vision has opened the doors for a global framework recognition enabling an environment open to international partnerships and a space for private education to enter the Indian educational sphere.

The Indian universities are now becoming at par and competing with the International Institutions. Therefore, the importance of Indian universities hosting international students is high. The speakers suggested that the Indian universities should not be just policy driven but also action driven to make our own institutes relevant to the world.

The collaboration between foreign and Indian universities helps the students to gain international certifications while in India or allow them to spend a semester studying abroad owing to the dual degree, joint degree and twinning programs. The necessary codification of these collaborations through the NEP has also given a sense of legitimacy to students and parents.

Furthermore, the Panelists shared their perspectives on the future of these partnerships and setting up of foreign university campuses in India. The most important element that came though was choosing the right partner and having a clear roadmap of activities. The key factor for the success of these Indian entities of international institutes depends on the localisation of their course prices, credits system and student experience to fit the Indian market. The structure must be specified as per the Indian environment and a thorough study on the Indian taxation laws and a clear operation model of the project needs to be in place which involves decisions like moving of faculty or the credits system etc.

It was also suggested that the Collaboration on various programs like Dual Degree, Joint Degree etc is a good first step for foreign universities to understand the Indian Educational system before fully setting up individual campuses.

The forum was then opened for an interactive Q&A round, followed by a vote of thanks by Ms. Namrata Vyas, Sr Manager, HR & Recruitment Services, IFCCI.
