Satwik-Chirag Make First French Open Semi-Finals

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty beat Manu Attri-Sumeeth Reddy to reach French Open men's doubles semis while India's singles campaign ended.

India's singles campaign in French Open came to a screeching halt as the country's top three shuttlers crashed out of the tournament on the same day, one by one. Men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are now the only Indians in the tournament in Paris.

Satwik and Chirag completely outplayed their senior compatriots Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy 21-17, 21-11 in just 31 minutes to march into the semi-finals of the tournament on a day that was largely disappointing for India with Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu being shown the door.

This is a first French Open semi-final for the young duo of Satwik and Chirag, who have been showing a consistent progress on the circuit in the past year or so.

Earlier in the year, Satwik and Chirag also won a historic silver medal in men's doubles at the Commonwealth Games to stamp their class on the badminton circuit.Even as the young duo have made it remarkably into the semi-finals, they have an uphill task ahead as they face world No.1 and Denmark Open winners last week Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia.

Satwik-Chriag have met Gideon-Sukamuljo twice this year in the Asian Games 2018 for Team event and Indonesia Open 2018 early in the year. While Satwik-Chirag lost in straight games in Indonesia, they managed to take the world No.1 pair to three games in the Asian Games before losing out in a close encounter in 48 minutes.
