IFCCI HR Committee in association with Trilegal organised a knowledge session on 17th October 2024 on the topic, ‘Understanding the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023: Implications for Employers’. This insightful webinar brought together 14 in-person and 40 virtual attendees, all focused on understanding the impact of the DPDP Act, 2023 on employers.
Mr. Suraj Chettri, VP, Head of HR - Airbus India & South Asia, and Head of Site - Bangalore, Airbus India and Chairperson, IFCCI HR Committee welcomed the members to the first HR Committee event of FY24-25 and Ms. Apeksha Mattoo, Partner - Labour & Employment Law, Trilegal shared the introductory remarks and set the event in motion.
Mr. Jaideep Reddy, Partner – Technology Law, Trilegal, discussed the challenges of scaling data systems due to varying employee information disclosures and the exclusion of anonymized and government-published data from the DPDP Act. He categorized HR data processing into employment life cycle data and incidental activities, emphasizing consent for non-employment-related processing and employee rights. He also highlighted data retention complexities, cross-border transfer compliance, and significant penalties for non-compliance.
Ms. Snehalata Deshmukh, CHRO and Data Protection Officer, Naval Group and Vice - Chairperson, IFCCI HR Committee India outlined key industry practices, including securing consent during recruitment and employment stages, conducting employee awareness programmes, developing comprehensive consent forms and policies, and collaborating with IT Teams to ensure data encryption and security.
The session ended with a Q&A segment where Mr. Reddy and Ms. Mattoo addressed the questions shared by the audience.
Ms. Renu Rohtagi, Leadership Programs Director, Air Liquide and Vice - Chairperson, IFCCI HR Committee India, concluded the session with a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation for the valuable insights shared by the speakers and emphasizing the importance of adopting proactive measures to safeguard data privacy and protection. The session was followed by a networking lunch at the Trilegal office, Mumbai.
