Renault Plans Best-Priced EV In India, Says Renault India CEO

While companies like Mahindra and Tata Motors have already launched their EVs eKUV 100 and Nexon EV at a competitive price in the Indian market, Cambolive asserted that two years is the right timeframe to launch an EV in the Indian market.

The French automaker Renault will be bringing the best-priced EV in the mass market in the next two years, claims Venkatraman Mamillapalle, CEO and MD, Renault India.

In an exclusive interaction with ETAuto, Mamillapalle said the brand which is known for segment creation and its affordable prices may launch its upcoming EV under the price range of Rs 10 lakh.

That EV could be a Kwid EV as Groupe Renault SVP, Chairman AMI-Pacific, Fabrice Cambolive in another interaction revealed, "Kwid, built on CMF-A platform, is a perfect body to receive electrification and that's what we are working on."

While companies like Mahindra and Tata Motors have already launched their EVs eKUV 100 and Nexon EV at a competitive price in the Indian market, Cambolive asserted that two years is the right timeframe to launch an EV in the Indian market.

Terming the absence of a strong EV ecosystem in India as one of the reasons behind this deal, he pointed, " Two-years ago at the Auto Expo 2018, there were a lot of announcements about EVs but what are the EV sales now two-years later."

Cambolive reasons, "We want to make an EV which sells well in the country and for that localisation is very important. To have these localise plans, we have to look at battery costs for which we need clear custom duty vision. For me, two years couldn't be sooner."

Echoing Groupe Renault SVP sentiments, Mamillapalle underlined, "If Renault brings a product, it has to be at attractive and affordable pricing with very strong service network and for that, we need time and space because we are going to do large extent of localisation to make an affordable electric car for customers."
The company which exported 13,500 cars in the year 2019, is also looking at making India its global export hub for low-cost vehicles. The part of volumes in South Africa, where the automaker is the best selling PV maker accounting for 18 percent market share, comes from India. It plans to introduce Triber in the South African on 14th February this year.

Cambolive said, " A part of India's strategy is to have a very big foot-print locally that's why our level of localisation is very high. Above 90 per cent for all the models we are producing here. We are also extending these volumes locally with a big potential for export. Besides Africa, we are also aiming to export Triber towards Southeast Asian countries."

The company envisages 50 percent of its total volume to be driven by exports and optimum utilization of its Chennai plant capacity which is close to about half a million, shared jointly between Nissan and Renault.

Renault India MD and CEO is also optimistic about its dealer network profitability turning green from this year resulting in a green balance-sheet from 2022. The automaker unveiled Triber AMT at the Auto Expo 2020 to go on sale from Q2 and will bring another product in the compact SUV segment in H2 of this year.
