PAN India : Interaction with H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India

Indo-French Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IFCCI) organized an Interactive Session with H.E. Mr Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India & Mr Sumeet Anand, IFCCI President on evolving situation of COVID-19 in India, its impact on business on Wednesday, April 22nd 2020. Ms. Dana Purcarescu, Minister Counsellor, French Embassy in India and Mr. Daniel Maitre, Minister-Counsellor for Economic Affairs, French Embassy in India also shared their thoughts on the subject.

 IFCCI President, Sumeet Anand, IFCCI, President,delivered the introductory remarks,shared his thoughts on how companies can get through the economic crisis and highlighted the importance of employee safety, reviewing impact, protecting key strengths and assets, working on recovery plans and smarter business models.

H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India talked about the evacuation steps taken by the Embassy to evacuate French Nationals at risk and collaboration with state governments and the Central Government for arranging flights for around 2000 tourists.

The Ambassador highlighted that the Indian Government has been very forthcoming in aiding France with medical equipments, other important aids etc. and France is ready to give back to India.

The Ambassador also pointed the strengthening political relations between the two countries and highlighted the long conversation between Indian Prime Minister Modi and French President Macron during end of March to discuss Covid-19 and what Indian and France could do at a global stage by doubling our efforts as responsible countries. Health Ministers of both countries have spokem on vaccines, R&D and special treatments. Various papers are being prepared by the Embassy to bring to the notice of the Indian Government the problems faced by companies.

Ms. Dana’s Purcarescu talked about other aspects on which the Embassy has been working such as visa renewal issues for expats with Indian authorities, arrangement of travel for stranded tourists, amongst many others.

Mr. Daniel Maitre threw light on the economic consequences in COVID-19 scenario, stimulus measures taken by the Ministry of Finance and the new opportunities existing for India vis-à-vis China.

It was an insightful Session with over 170 participants joining the Session and involved an interactive session with questions ranging from the availability of special medical facilities and special aircraft for French Nationals, applicability of Force Majeure, the existing and increased budgetary allocations for COVID 19 by the Government of India.

Other discussion points included the working of Industries/manufacturing sector in Europe and the prospective CSR initiatives by French Companies in India alongwith the situation of work from home in Europe and French organisations in India.

Ms. Payal S. Kanwar, Director General, IFCCI highlighted key initiatives taken by the Chamber during the pandemic and delivered the vote of thanks.
