French Giant Alstom To Set-Up Loco Shed At Ajni

About 250 nos of 12,000 HP electric locomotives would be maintained at the new ELS

A big ticket investment under the Make in India scheme is earmarked for Nagpur. Under this, Alstom, the French multinational, will set-up an electric loco shed (ELS) to maintain 12,000 HP locomotives. The new ELS would handle Period Overhaul (PoH) of 250 locomotives.

The project is to be located at Ajni where Central Railway's Nagpur Division has allocated 13,000 sq.mtrs of land to Alstom. Ajni already boasts of an ELS which is presently run by Central Railway and the new facility will come up at the existing loco shed, it is learnt.

PoH of the locomotives is meant to increase their serviceability and ensure they run smoothly during their lifetime. As per the agreement inked between the French giant Alstom and Railway Board, the company is to manufacture and supply 12,000 HP electric locomotives. Railways is focussing on the freight movement and hence contracted for purchase of 800 such high capacity locos that can transform the way goods are to be carried in near future. The 12,000 HP locomotives would be manufactured at the Madhepura factory in Bihar while maintenance of electric locos would be in Ajni and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
