Roundtable Meeting on Intellectual Property Rights: Scope, Issues and Challenges in India

Indo-French Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IFCCI), in association with the Embassy of France and India IP SME Helpdesk, organized a Roundtable Meeting on Intellectual Property Rights: Scope, Issues and Challenges in India, on 6th June 2023 in a hybrid format at the Embassy of France in New Delhi.

Ms. Rishika Roy, Head - Committees & Partnerships, IFCCI welcomed members and speakers and thanked the Embassy of France for hosting this event. The Meeting started with a quick round of introduction.

Mr. Sebastien Connan, Regional Counsellor Intellectual Property India & South Asia, Embassy of France in New Delhi, welcomed all the guests and shared his views on the importance of considering India's Intellectual Property (IP) system for French companies working in India.

Ms. Ankita Tyagi, IP Expert, India IP SME Helpdesk, introduced the topic with her theme presentation. In her presentation, she spoke about the different aspects of the Indian IP system, importance of the requisite knowledge and awareness on patents and trademark filing, potential challenges, and suggestions on the approach that the French companies could follow. She highlighted that the IP SME Helpdesk experts provide high-quality, confidential, and personalised first-line answers and advisory to the IPR related queries by foreign companies.

Mr. Vikrant Rana, Managing Partner, S.S. Rana & Co, shared his thoughts on how SMEs and large-sized companies can conduct searches in relevant patent or trademark policies. He touched upon patent filings, prosecution process in India, patentability, and non-patentability subject matters, drafting specifications, post-grant process, timelines, etc.

This was followed by an interactive session with members wherein they sought clarity on the Indian IP ecosystem, the challenges they face, the ways of addressing these challenges and the possible ways of connecting with IP SME Helpdesk to seek their help in facilitating their business expansion strategies in the Indian market.

The Session was attended by the General Counsels, Public Affairs Heads and Finance Representatives of French member companies namely Sanofi, Biomerieux India, ARaymond, Capgemini, Testmesures Spherea Solutions Pvt Ltd, Centdegrés India Pvt Ltd, Fives India Engineering & Projects Pvt. Ltd., and Group SEB India.
