The Indo-French Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IFCCI), in partnership with IndusLaw, successfully hosted an informative session on Data Protection Legislation in India on September 1st, 2023. The event was organized in response to the recent enactment of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), which received Presidential assent and was officially notified on August 11th, 2023, marking a significant milestone in India's data protection landscape. 
 
The event commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Rishika Roy, Head - Committees & Partnership at IFCCI, who greeted the esteemed speakers and participants. She elucidated the purpose of organizing such knowledge-sharing sessions, emphasizing the importance of understanding and navigating the intricacies of the new data protection law. 
 
Ms. Shreya Suri, Partner at Induslaw, took the stage to set the context for the discussion. In her comprehensive keynote address, she provided valuable insights into the DPDP Act. Ms. Suri delved into critical aspects of the new legislation, including key concerns surrounding it, its alignment with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the potential ambiguities concerning government rights, and the imperative need to conform to Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC) norms during the rule-drafting process. 
 
Following the keynote address, an engaging panel discussion unfolded, featuring experts in the field of data protection. The panelists included: 
- Ms. Charu Sharma, Senior Manager - Cyber Security & Software Compliance, Delhivery 
- Ms. Farnawaz Mistry, Head Legal, Roquette India 
- Ms. Priyam Dhamankar, Legal & Compliance Director, Servier India 
- Ms. Sherazad Boomla, Data Protection Officer, Gentrack 

These distinguished panelists interacted with Ms. Shreya Puri, Partner at Induslaw, on a variety of pertinent topics. They explored subjects such as technological adaptations required to comply with the new law, the approach to privacy policy hyperlinking, considerations for data fiduciaries when framing 'requests' and 'notices,' and the challenges inherent in ensuring third-party compliance. 
 
The event concluded with an engaging interactive session, which saw the active participation of over 70 attendees from various cities. This segment provided an opportunity for the audience to pose questions, seek clarifications, and engage in meaningful discussions with the speakers and panelists. The event's success was underscored by the enthusiastic participation and active engagement of the attendees, ensuring that the knowledge shared would have a lasting impact in navigating India's new data protection framework.
