IFCCI Logistics and Maritime Committee conducted a meeting for preparing a recommendation letter for representation to government authorities on 14th May 2020.
Considering the current COVID 19 scenario, IFCCI in order to bring to forth the problems faced by its member companies will make a representation to the Empowered Group on Supply Chain and to the Special Secretary of Logistics. To make this report, IFCCI, under the aegis of Logistics and Maritime Committee with the great leadership of Mr. Vaibhav Vohra, MD- Continental Carriers Pvt Ltd (Committee Chairman) conducted a survey of the problems being faced by its members.
The survey received more than 30 responses highlighting various issues related to lack of communication; problems at the ports, airports and with the customs officials and so on.
After analyzing all the concerns, Mr. Vohra organized a meeting of the Committee on 14th May, 2020 to outline and discuss the details of the report.
He underscored the points that would be included in the representation to the Government. He stated that although the government has allowed movement of goods domestically various organizations are facing many hurdles while trying to move. He further clarified that the Customs Department has been working 24*7 since the starting of the Lockdown as it is considered an essential service. With respect to the sea ports numerous problems are being faced by all the companies. There is lack of fumigation services, the port health officers are unavailable, there are huge delays in getting clearances and there is massive congestion at the ports. Moving on to the airports the situation is not very different, the companies are facing many problems while getting the cargo cleared. Additionally, very high detention and storage charges are being levied by the authorities.
During the discussion many issues were discussed and various additions to the Representation to the Government were proposed. Some of the problems discussed included the restrictions imposed by the local authorities contrary to the directions of the Union Government, exorbitantly high container detention charges, unavailability of manpower, CFS charges and cold storage problems.
The meeting was attended by more than 30 members.
