Objective:
India’s product-quality regime is evolving rapidly, with Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the BIS Act making certification mandatory for products across more than 700 categories, including electronics, electrical goods, machinery, steel, chemicals, automotive components, toys and furniture. For covered products, BIS certification is essential for import, sale and distribution in India.
With regulations, exemptions and standards changing frequently, French manufacturers and exporters face increasing challenges in determining whether their products fall within scope, which certification route applies, and how to manage evolving compliance timelines.
The session will provide practical guidance on navigating India’s BIS certification framework, with a focus on recent regulatory developments and their implications for French businesses.
Key Take Aways:
- Latest QCO developments: Understanding recent changes, including the repeal of the Scheme X Omnibus Technical Regulation and the upcoming Electrical Appliances QCO effective October 2026.
- Sector-specific implications: Key developments for electrical & electronics, machinery, automotive, chemicals, medical devices and consumer goods.
- BIS certification process: Overview of FMCS, CRS, Authorised Indian Representatives, factory audits, testing, digital applications and expected timelines.
- Navigating regulatory uncertainty: Addressing overlapping QCOs, components vs. finished products, transition periods and changing applicability.
- Policy advocacy & regulatory engagement: Understanding how businesses can seek clarifications, applicability determinations and transition relief directly from regulators.
- Practical insights for French companies: Building a clear, documented and defensible approach to product compliance and market access in India.
