On 7th September 2026, the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in association with CMS INDUSLAW, hosted a webinar on “𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮”, bringing together members of the Indo-French business community to discuss the evolving landscape of cross-border taxation.
The session opened with welcome remarks by Ms. Rishika Roy, Deputy Director (North), IFCCI, followed by theme presentation by Mr. Lokesh Shah, Tax Partner, CMS INDUSLAW, that covered several critical aspects of personal taxation for expatriates in India, including:
🔹 Determining residential status and the scope of taxable income in India
🔹 Navigating dual residency between India and France under the applicable tax treaty and its tiebreaker provisions
🔹 Understanding short-stay exemption conditions and their practical implications
🔹 Managing foreign tax credit claims and the importance of robust supporting documentation
🔹 Addressing foreign asset disclosures and other cross-border reporting obligations
🔹 Ensuring timely compliance with tax filings and tax clearance requirements prior to departure from India
The interaction with participants further highlighted the practical challenges that arise when international assignments intersect with evolving tax and reporting frameworks. The QnA session was moderated by Ms. Shiveti Verma, Assistant Manager - Committees & Membership, IFCCI.
